Gift of Huangyao: A Unique Packaging Design Connecting Culture and Family

Designing a Souvenir Sauce Package Inspired by Local Heritage

Taking inspiration from the cultural buildings and natural scenery of Huangyao, designer Jie Yang has created a one-of-a-kind packaging design for a local specialty sauce. This design not only showcases the beauty of the ancient town but also symbolizes the importance of family and home.

This innovative packaging design features a three-layer carved paper pattern that represents the traditional Chinese courtyard. The layers, known as "outer-middle-inner," create an enclosed three-dimensional effect, reminiscent of the three-way connection that forms a home. The bottle cap is designed in the shape of the bluestone road, a significant historical feature of the ancient town, symbolizing the idea of "going into thousands of families." This gift serves as a keepsake, connecting family affection and embodying the Chinese people's desire for prosperity and harmony in their homes.

What sets this packaging design apart is its ability to capture the essence of Huangyao and its sauce. The design team has carefully considered the town's rich history, unique flavor, and status as a popular tourist destination. By creating a souvenir packaging that tells the story of the sauce and the town, this design allows visitors from around the world to take a piece of Huangyao home with them, spreading the story of this local specialty everywhere.

The realization of this design involves the use of degradable environmental protection paper as the main packaging material, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices and the harmonious coexistence of humans and the environment. The outer package measures 75 mm thick, 380 mm long, and 150 mm wide, providing ample space for the sauce and showcasing the intricate carved paper design.

Through this unique packaging design, Jie Yang and the design team aim to create a new brand influence for the sauce, rooted in traditional culture. By studying historical and contemporary life scenes and incorporating local cultural characteristics, legends, and allusions, the design seamlessly blends the classics and modernity. The result is a packaging design that not only stands out but also connects with consumers on a deeper level.

The project, which started in September 2021 and was completed in November 2021, was carried out in Shenzhen, with proofing and production taking place in Guangxi Province. The design team faced several challenges during the process, including the intricate layered hollowed-out carving paper. Achieving the perfect historical and cultural pattern with a perspective effect proved to be a difficult task. However, through innovative printing techniques and meticulous craftsmanship, the team successfully overcame these challenges, resulting in a stunning final product.

This exceptional packaging design has received recognition in the form of the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2022. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life. By incorporating the best practices in art, science, design, and technology, the Gift of Huangyao packaging design truly stands out as a testament to the designer's skill and vision.
